Patty Hoyt, Shirley Smith, John Mulvey (center) and Dick Rasmussen pose in Native American costumes from a 1950 Ice Follies performance called “The Totem Ceremonial Dance” at the Lakewood Ice Arena. The Ice Follies were the precursor to the Ice Capades which featured elaborate production numbers and costumes and later include several Olympians and world champion skaters. By 1955 the show had eight performances and 175 skaters. The rink also became the entertainment hub for Tacoma area residents since its opening in 1938 and continued until 1982 when part of the building collapsed and the rest was demolished.
