Description

The Tacoma Community College Softball team is shown in a team photo taken during the late 1980s. Head coach Bob Maguinez, a Stadium High graduate, played for one of the best American Legion teams in the 1960s, the Cheney Studs. Maguinez, a three-sport athlete, started playing baseball at the age of 16 and played in Europe in the early 1950s before returning to play at the College of Puget Sound (now University of Puget Sound). Maguinez played for the Stanley Shoemen in 1955-56 and helped the team win the national championship. He was chosen for the All-Tournament team. Maguinez also played or softball for the Hydrades state team, the Woodworth contractors and eventually the Studs. It was with the Studs that Maguinez was a national runner-up in 1959 and a national champion in 1960. He was inducted into the Pacific Northwest Old-Timers Hall of Fame in 1984. Maguinez coached various teams within the Cheney Studs organization in the 1950s-1960s, went on to become an umpire after his playing days ended.
