Description

Pitcher Woodrow Red, who was stationed in Tacoma for the Coast Guard, left a lasting impression in the sport of fastpitch in Pierce County even though he didn’t play for very long. No-hitters and one-hitters were the norm for Red whenever he took the mound and in 1943 he led the Tacoma Teamsters to the state and regional titles and then onto the national fastpitch tournament. In high school he signed for Detroit and played briefly for Hot Springs where he went 5-3 before deciding on a softball career. Red was inducted into the Tacoma-Pierce County Old-Timers Baseball-Softball Association Hall of Fame, one of many during his career, in 2003. Photo donated by Woodrow Red.
