Description

The Tacoma Coast Guard fastpitch team photo from the 1940s. Woodrow Red, who is dressed in black and is in the middle of the back row on the left, is considered to be among the best fastpitch pitchers ever to play in Pierce County. Stationed with the Coast Guard in Tacoma, he pitched for Worthen Bank and led them to regional championships in 1941 and 1942. From 1946 to 1970, he was selected to an all-star team almost every year. Red signed with the Detroit Tigers out of high school and played briefly for them in the minor leagues.
