Description

Bronka Sundstrom crosses a crevasse high on Mount Rainier on Aug. 31, 2002, on her way to becoming the oldest woman every to climb Rainier. She was 77 at the time and guided by Pacific Lutheran University graduate Jason Edwards. Most take 2-3 days to make the climb. Sundstrom did it in one. Sundstrom is also arguably Pierce County’s most famous hiker. Sundstrom survived the Auschwitz and Bergen-Belsen concentration camps during World War II and met her husband, Ake, in a hospital in 1945. They moved to Tacoma in 1948 then Ashford in 1980. While no records are kept of such things, many believe Sundstrom has made the challenging hike to 10,188-foot Camp Muir more than anybody other than a few longtime climbing rangers and guides.
