Description

Doris Brown Heritage is one of the legendary figures in women's track and field, both as an athlete and as a coach. Doris Severtson graduated from Peninsula High School and went on to win the International Cross Country Championships five consecutive years from 1967-71. She won silver medals in the 800 meters at the Pan American Games in 1967 and 1971, and placed fifth at the 1968 Summer Olympics in Mexico City. She also competed in the 1972 Olympics in Munich, West Germany. In 1976, she won the Vancouver International Marathon and placed second in the New York City Marathon. She coached track and cross country for four decades at Seattle Pacific University, her alma mater. She served as an assistant coach for the United States at the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles and the 1987 world championships in Rome. In 1999, she became the second female inducted into the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association Hall of Fame. She's also been inducted into the National Track and Field and National Distance Running halls of fame. She was named "Woman of the Year" by the Washington State Legislature in 1976.
