This undated photo of a local community basketball team sponsored by Mullan’s Collision Center features Tacoma sports legend Bob Maguinez, front row, center. Maguinez graduated from Stadium High and stayed in Tacoma, where he starred in football, basketball and baseball for the College of Puget Sound. He was a standout in all sports, but “Mac” was likely best known for his success in baseball, where he played for two amateur national champions: Shoeman’s and the 1960 Cheney Studs. He served as an umpire for 18 years, a recreation supervisor for Metro Parks and the Tacoma School District and was also a scout for the Minnesota Twins and New York Yankees. His impact on Tacoma’s youth sports culture was such that Bob Maguinez Field was named in his honor at Heidelberg/Davis Park.Lexicon
