Description

The Cheney Studs football team poses in their team uniforms, including coach Bob Maguinez at left. The Cheney Studs were part of a larger organization and were sponsored by sports enthusiast and philanthropist Ben Cheney. Cheney himself was an avid baseball fan but came from a low-income family who couldn’t afford his own baseball gear. Cheney grew up to sponsor numerous teams, of both sexes, and by his death in 1971 it was estimated Cheney had helped more than 5,000 youth through sponsorship by the Cheney Lumber Company, which was founded by Cheney in 1936. The youth program also included baseball, hockey, and basketball and started in the mid-1950s. The Studs baseball team made their first trip to the AABC Nationals in 1954, again in 1955 and won the championship in 1960. Coach Bob Maguinez at left. Phooto by Richards Studio.
