Description

Bob Maguinez, left, poses with Joe Kelly in a Tacoma baseball uniform in a photo taken June 8 1968. Maguinez coached the Cheney Studs baseball team after playing for them as they won the American Amateur Baseball Congress (AABC) National Tournament in 1960. Maguinez graduated from Stadium High School and the University of Puget Sound and was a gifted player from the start. Maguinez played with veteran players while just 16 years old. “Mac” as he was known to friends and teammates became a hitting star for Stanley’s Shoemen, the first West Coast team to win a national amateur championship in 1956. It was with the Shoemen that Maguinez played all nine positions for one inning in a Tacoma City League game. Maguinez went on to become a well-respected umpire and a long-time athletic supervisor for the Metropolitan Park District in Tacoma. Maguinez was inducted into the Washington State sports Hall of Fame in 2005. Photo donated by Pat Maguinez.
