Description

Julie Kurrus McGovern was a three-sport standout at Franklin Pierce High School and the school’s first true female athletic standout, lettering in volleyball, basketball and track in all three years of her career to become the first nine-letter winner female in school history when she graduated in 1981. She went on to compete in volleyball at the University of Washington, where she was known as a ferocious blocker and held the school record for blocks in a game — 15 against Montana State in 1984 — for more than 20 years. Her 60 solo blocks in 1984 was still in the program’s Top 10 as of 2018. So dominant was Kurrus McGovern in high school that in 1981 she was the only Franklin Pierce female athlete to qualify for the Class AA state track meet. She placed first in the high jump (5 feet, 7 inches) and fourth in the long jump (17 feet, 8 ½ inches) and carried the Cardinals to a ninth-place team finish on her own.
