Description

Holding his helmet, George Hammond stands next to some other race car drivers and a race car. Hammond was a popular racer over the years in Tacoma and a highlight came when he won the Pike's Peak Auto Race, a 12-mile gravel and paved race in Colorado and began back in 1916. Hammond, who was a part-time racer and a full-time tour bus driver, won the Pikes Peak race in 1952 driving the Kurtis Kraft and finishing. As of 2011, the race is fully paved. The race isn't on a flat track. It has an elevation gain of 4,500 feet, making it a challenge for Hammond to win. Bobby Unser won this race six straight years from 1958 to 1963.
