Description

Russ Congdon sits in the race he often drove and three men stand behind this race car, which had the No. 9. From left to right, the three standing men are Claud Lathrup, owner Bill Hondle and Bill Sidelman. Congdon, who was born in Puyallup in 1924 and died there in 1998, raced mainly in midget and sprint cars. He was a popular and frequent midget and sprint car racer in the late 1950s and the early 1960s. He won three notable midget races, winning in Detroit in 1958, at the South Bend Speedway in Indiana in 1960 and at Columbus Motor Speedway in Ohio in 1961. In 1964, he was involved in a bad crash that burned him and limited his racing.
