Description

Joe LaPorte, who is on the far left, stands with this group shot of the 1960 Tacoma-Pierce County ski school instructors at Paradise Valley. LaPorte, who was born 1921 in San Francisco and moved with his family to Tacoma in 1929, developed a passion for skiing when he was a teenager as his father would bring him skiing at Paradise on Mount Rainier. While attending Bellarmine High School, LaPorte was on the school's ski team and when he joined the Army in 1944 he found a way to continued to follow his passion to ski and spearheaded a program for recreational skiing for officers, enlisted personnel and WACs. From 1952 to 1965, he was the chief instructor of the Tacoma Ski School, which offered free skiing lessons. He was inducted into the Tacoma-Pierce County Sports Hall of Fame.
