Joe LaPorte, sitting on the bottom right in this photo taken in 1957, poses for a promotional photo for the fifth annual Ski School Jamboree along with three female skiers and Don St. Thomas. LaPorte, who was born in 1921 and graduated from Bellarmine High School in Tacoma, was certified as an advanced ski instructor by the Pacific Northwest Ski Association, and from 1952 to 1965 he was the chief instructor of the Tacoma Ski School. In the late 1960s, LaPorte started the Cascade Ski School. He also started the Totem Ski Club on American Lake. LaPorte, who was inducted into the Tacoma-Pierce County Sports Hall of Fame in 2007, developed his love for skiing as a teenager when his dad would bring him to Paradise on Mount Rainier to ski. St. Thomas hosted the “Don St. Thomas Show,” which was a local hour long TV program of interviews and news.Lexicon
