Description

The Pikes Peak International Hill Climb auto race is one of the most famous in the world and has been held in the mountains of Colorado Springs, Colorado, for more than 100 years. Spencer Penrose started the race in 1915 with Rea Lentz, a 22-year-old Washington native, won the inaugural 12.42 mile hill climb in 20 minutes, 55.6 seconds up the 14,110-foot summit of Pikes Peak. The race includes different classes of motorsports including motorcycles, cars, trucks and quads as well as do-it-yourself cars to full-factory race vehicles with professional drivers. The race has become known as the “Race to the Clouds.” Photo donated by Bill Seidelman.
