Description

Tacoma’s Lyle Morton (in back, second from right with earmuffs) became one of the premier badminton players during the 1930s when the sport was quite popular. Morton won the first badminton tournament held at the Point Defiance Pavilion on April 2, 1933, claiming the men’s singles title. Morton teamed with Francis Chapman to also win the men’s doubles titles. In 1936, Morton beat Jack DuPriest 15-2, 15-6 to capture the mens’ singles City Badminton Championship held at the Mason Methodist Church. Morton then teamed up with Chapman to win another doubles title, defeating DuPriest and Lawrence McCamant 15-11 and 17-5.
