Description

Joan Mahon Allard is captured during her backswing looking down the fairway. Mahon Allard was a six-time winner of the Tacoma City Women’s Golf Association amateur championship and three-time winner of the Washington State Women’s Public Links Golf Championship She also won the Brookdale Club championship 12 times when women were starting to make inroads into amateur and professional sports. Mahon Allard had two aces during her career, the first during the finals of the city tournament at Fircrest and the second came in 1971 in the Pacific Northwest golf Association (PNGA) tournament at the Tacoma Golf and Country Club. She sank the hole-in-one on the sixth hole, and, to anyone’s knowledge, she was the only woman to score an ace in the championship event of the PNGA. Mahon Allard received a silver plate to commemorate the event. Mahon Allard started playing golf thanks to Jane Bradley, the founder of organized women’s golf in Tacoma. Mahon Allard and fellow golfer Ruth Canale (Ward) were known as the “Brookdale Golfing Twins” and repeatedly beat their male counterparts with drives of more than 200 yards.
