Mark Alger seen playing squash with an unknown player, rose to prominence in the sport in the 1970s trough the 1990s. Alger started playing at the Tacoma Lawn and Tennis Club while in junior high school. By 14 he had won the TLTC’s men’s division squash champion. With partner Tim Larson, Alger finished second in the state high school boys tennis championships. By the end of the 1970s, Alger was a member of the four-man U.S. National Squash Team that played at the World Championships in Australia. Alger, the first West Coast athlete to make the team, helped the U.S. to a ninth place finish — including winning its first ever game and match in World team competition. Alger went on to win the 1980 U.S. Men’s Squash Championship and played on the World Professional Squash circuit, won the over-30 national championship twice and was a quarterfinals at the World Masters Squash Championship in Melbourne, Australia.
