Description

Opening day of the Allenmore Golf Course in the heart of Tacoma was a big day for area residents, as seen in this picture of a group of women dressed in their golfing attire while holding golf clubs. Construction on Allenmore began on July 12, 1930 on 206 acres and opened for play on August 14, 1931. The first official foursome contained Tacoma’s mayor at the time, Melvin G. Tennant, Rev. C. Oscar Johnson, Ray Roberts’ the president of the Tacoma Country and Golf Club, and Dr. Wilmot Read, president of Fircrest Golf Club. In 1955 Allenmore became a 27-hole course. The following year the course was sold to the Tacoma Elks Club who still own the course today. Photo donated by Lowell Butson.
