Description

In 1963 Lute Jerstad was part of the first American mountaineering team to reach the summit of Mount Everest, the world's highest peak. He and three others nearly died during the 29,035-foot peak when they were forced to spent the night at 28,000, which, at the time, was the highest any mountaineer had ever surrived the night. Jerstad was a graduate of Pacific Lutheran University where he played basketall. He owned a guiding service in Portland that led rafting, climbing and trekking trips. He taught climbing schools on Mount Hood and Mount Rainier. In 1998, he died of a heart attack at age 61 near the summit of Mount Kala Pattar, a Himalayan peak neighboring Everest.
