Description

Using a rope and a bridge fashioned from a ladder, two climbers cross a crevasse in this image donated by Susan Jerstad. She is the wife of Lute Jerstad, the first Pierce County resident to climb Mount Everest. Jerstad summited the world's highest peak in 1963 as part of the first American team to accomplish the feat. Jerstad was a graduate of Peninsula High and Pacific Lutheran University. He played baseball, basketball and football at Peninsula and basketball at PLU. He also earned degrees from Washington State University and the University of Oregon. He taught briefly at Franklin Pierce High School near Tacoma. He died of a heart attack while climbing Mount Kala Pattar in the Himalayas in 1998.
