Members of the 1963 Mount Everest expedition that included Gig Harbor’s Lute Jerstad climb up the Khumbu Icefall. The legendary ice fall sits about 18,000 feet up the Nepali side of the world’s highest peak. The Khumbu Icefall is considered one of the most dangerous obstacles on the South Col route. The area is the location of some of mountaineering’s most famous tragedies. In 1970, an avalanche killed six climbers. In 2014, 16 climbers were killed by an avalanche. Jerstad's party successfully navigated the icefall and the Pacific Lutheran University graduate went on to become the second American to reach the summit of Everest.Lexicon
