A climber trudges his way upward on Mount Everest during the 1963 expedition that put the first Americans on top of the world’s highest peak. After Seattle-native Jim Whittaker became the first American to reach the summit on May 1, 1960, the party put Gig Harbor’s Lute Jerstad and Ohio’s Barry Bishop on the summit. Jerstad and Bishop reach the top via the route Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay used in 1953 when they became the first climbers confirmed to reach the summit.Lexicon
