Description

Two mountaineers climb Mount Everest during the 1963 expedition that placed the first American’s on top of the world’s highest peak. Gig Harbor’s Lute Jerstad, a Mount Rainier guide, was part of the expedition and on May 22, 1963, he became the second American ever to reach the summit. Seattle’s Jim Whittaker was the first on May 1, 1963. Jerstad was the first person ever to record video footage from the top Everest. Other members of the party who reached the summit included Willi Unsoeld, a Rainier guide and future faculty member at The Evergreen State College; Barry Bishop of Ohio; and Tom Hornbein, a future University of Washington professor.
