An image of Mount Everest donated by Susan Jerstad, the wife of Tacoma mountaineer Lute Jerstad. In 1963, Jerstad, a former Pacific Lutheran University basketall player, was one of the first Americans to climb the world's highest mountain. He worked as mountain and rafting guide in Portland led climbing schools on Mount Hood and Mount Rainier. He was the first person to shoot film footage on top of Mount Everest. He died of a heart attack at age 61 on neighboring Mount Kala Pattar in 1998.Lexicon
