Description

An artist’s rendering of a member of the 1963 United States expedition making his way to the summit of Mount Everest, the world’s highest peak. The expedition included Lute Jerstad, who grew up in Gig Harbor and played basketball at Pacific Lutheran University. Jerstad was the second American to reach the mountain’s summit. He and Ohio’s Barry Bishop reached the summit via the route used in 1953 by Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay when they became the first confirmed climbers to summit Everest.
