Description

Before he hit 316 major league home runs and drove in 1,139 in 17 seasons, Ron Cey was a standout at Tacoma's Mount Tahoma High School. Pictured here playing third base for the Los Angeles Dodgers, Cey established himself as the everyday third baseman for LA in 1973. Cey was a 6-time National League All-Star and co-MVP of the 1981 World Series. He finished in the top 25 of NL MVP voting five times. Cey was originally drafted out of Mount Tahoma by the New York Mets in 1966. He went to Washington State U. instead and signed with the Dodgers after they selected him in the third round of the 1968 MLB draft. Cey was nicknamed "The Penguin" by legendary WSU coach Bobo Brayton for his waddling walking style. Cey was inducted into the Tacoma Pierce County Sports Hall of Fame in 2005. He was the first athlete at Mount Tahoma HS to earn nine varsity letters.
