Description

Years before the National Basketball Association was formed and many more before it became popular, basketball culture in Tacoma was strong and revolved around the amateur opportunities available for all, but the Boys Club on 25th and Yakima Street was the center for youth sports that would later evolve into a much more expansive program and become the South Puget Sound Boys and Girls Clubs. This photo of a team from 1946-47 season was likely taken in the original club location which was dedicated in 1942 and placed in a location known for a high rate of juvenile delinquency. It was founded by Judge Fred Remann to “fulfill the social needs of boys 6-16.” The idea was to provide the boys with proper guidance and help keep them out of trouble through activities like basketball. The club was overseen by the Salvation Army, though eventually broke with the organization and started to open clubs in other areas of the city in 1954.
