Description

Tacoma native Steve Whitaker had a five-year major league career as an outfielder with the New York Yankees (1966-68), the expansion Seattle Pilots (1969) and the San Francisco Giants (1970). Whitaker, a graduate of Lincoln High School, hit .230 with 24 home runs and 85 RBIS during his 266 game major league career. He played in the Pacific Coast League from 1970-72 until retiring. Whitaker was drafted by the Kansas City Royals with the 23rd pick of the 1968 expansion draft but never played for the Royals. He was part of a preseason trade to the Pilots in 1969 for outfielder Lou Piniella, who went on to manage the Seattle Mariners from 1993-2002.
