Before becoming The Boys & Girls Clubs of South Puget Sound in 1982, the Tacoma Boys Clubs were established in the hopes of providing the boys with proper guidance and help keep them out of trouble through activities like basketball. The clubs sponsored multiple sports and provided opportunities to boys in hopes of reducing juvenile delinquency starting in 1942. The South End Boys Club was established in 1954 and the Eastside Boys Club came next and more later, including the Southeast Athletic Association and others which sponsored teams which competed in multiple sports around the city. The name change in 1982 reflected a commitment to serving all youth of Tacoma and served as a model for other areas as Lakewood adopted a similar model as did Belfair.Lexicon
