Description

Kathy Hemion, shown at-bat during a recreation softball game, was a phenomenal female athlete in Tacoma’s history. Hemion, a graduate of Lakes High School and Western Washington University, had a successful coaching career at Pacific Lutheran University. Despite lack of opportunity to play sports in high school in the 1970s, Hemion competed in basketball, volleyball, field hockey, synchronized swimming and tennis at WWU. She had her biggest impact in basketball at Western where she helped the Vikings advance to the AIAW national tournament twice and is a member of the WWU Hall of Fame. Hemion led the PLU women’s basketball program from 1975-85, coaching the team to a national tournament berth in 1980 and to an 18-win season in 1982. She also coached volleyball for 10 seasons and slowpitch softball from 1975-76. After returning to Tacoma, Hemion began playing softball and was so proficient, she played left and center field most of her career, she was inducted into the USSSA Slowpitch Softball Hall of Fame and continued to play until 2000 when she retired from the sport.
