From left, John Sayre, Rusty Wailes, Ted Nash and Dan Ayrault represented Team USA in the coxless fours at the 1960 Olympics in Rome. On Lake Albano, the team was in last place after 500 meters but rallied, without a coxswain, to win the gold. Italy was second (6:28.78) and the Soviet Union settled for bronze. Their time of 6:26.26 was a world record at the time. Sayre graduated from Clover Park High, Ayrault attended Tacoma’s Lowell Elementary and Jason Lee Junior High. Wailes graduated from Yale and Nash graduated from the University of Washington.
