Ben Cheney hosted many gathering at his home where he invited players and coaches of his sports teams. Marv Harshman, middle left, was the coach for Pacific Lutheran University and Washington State University. Many of the players and coaches from the Cheney Studs went on to become some of the most influential referees and coaches in Washington state history.
The Cheney Studs were one of the top semi-pro teams on the West Coast attracting former All- America college players as former ABA/NBA players to their team. They traveled to Alaska, California, Montana, Oregon, Idaho, and throughout Washington in the 1950s playing the Harlem Clowns as well as in other exhibitions. Gate receipts helped compensate them for their time and Ben Cheney made up the difference.
