Description

Tacoma’s Don Flye, seen in this black and white action photo, was an accomplished tennis player as a youth, earning a No. 14 national ranking and winning a national junior doubles title in 1951. Flye played a year at Modesto Junior College in California before playing three years at the University of Washington. While at UW Flye won three Pacific Coast Conference Northern Division doubles championships and one singles title. He was also a member of the U.S. Davis Cup in 1953 and was nationally ranked in 1954. Flye also participated in three U.S. Open singles events, three doubles championships and played at Wimbledon. Among his victories were wins against Wimbledon champions Ashley Coper and Sidney Wood. Flye was inducted into the Washington State Sports Hall of Fame in 2005. Photo was donated by Don Flye.
