Description

Gary Lindgren’s love of sports translated to his writing as a sports reporter for the Bremerton Sun (now Kitsap Sun), from 1956-59 before moving south to write for the Tacoma News Tribune from 1960-63. Lindgren covered high school sports during the academic year and golf in the summer. He also wrote a column “Putter Patter” and covered the 1962 Women’s National Amateur Tournament at Tacoma Country & Golf Club. Lindgren left journalism when he became an athletics coordinator for the Metropolitan Park District of Tacoma from 1964 until his retirement in 1993. Lindgren served as tournament director for slowpitch and fastpitch tournaments for youth and adult as well as adult team golf. He was the director of the West Central District high school baseball All-Star games at Heidelberg Park and Cheney Stadium, organized Pierce County Soccer Referees Association and served as its assigning secretary for many years. Lindgren also started the Puget Sound Amateur golf tournament and was its tournament director until 1980. He is a member of the Tacoma-Pierce County Old-Timers Baseball-Softball Association Hall of Fame. Photo donated by Gary Lindgren.
