Description

Ron Crowe, a 2007 Tacoma-Pierce County Sports Hall of Fame member and pictured in a taking a shot during his high school basketball days, might have made his voice his calling card in the world of broadcasting but he was a high school and intercollegiate student-athlete long before entering the broadcast booth. Crowe, a Tacoma native, attended Puyallup High School where he was an all-state basketball player in 1955-56. He helped lead the Vikings to a fifth-place finish while scoring 18.5 points per game during his senior season. Crowe played on the freshman basketball team at the University of Washington before transferring to Western Washington for his final season. While at WWU, Crowe established himself as one of the best to play the game in Bellingham. He led the Vikings to their first-ever NAIA National Tournament appearance in 1960, earning All-America honors, All-Evergreen Conference and All-State recognition. Crowe set school records in points (20.7 per game), along with a season record for made free throws that stood more than 45 years. Crowe became known as a color commentator and was a hit for South Puget Sound sports fans with play-by-play man Carl Lambert. The pair broadcast on numerous local stations including KUPY in Puyallup, KMO and KLAY. Crowe also served as a three-term mayor in Puyallup from 1984-1990. Photo donated by Ron Crowe.
