A black and white photograph of Rich Hammermaster. Known as “the Hammer” for his crushing blocks that led the Puyallup native to be recognized as one of the top offensive linemen to come out of the area where he was selected as an all-star center out of the Puget Sound League. After graduating from Puyallup High School in 1953, Hammermaster went on to play football at the University of Washington (1953-1955) and finished his college career playing for the College of Puget Sound (1955-1958). He also played basketball and tennis for both Puyallup High School and the University of Puget Sound. He played two seasons of basketball with UPS (1954-1956) and was a player and coach of the Loggers tennis team in 1958. He went on to both serve in the United States Air Force where he was stationed at Hamilton Air Force Base; while there he played three seasons from 1958-1960. After his service, Hammermaster returned back to his hometown where he began teaching at Puyallup High School while also coaching both the tennis and boys basketball teams while working as an assistant coach on the Vikings football team under head coach Bob Ryan. He coached the Vikings basketball team for 15 years, coaching Puyallup High School to a state title in 1971, while winning the league title six times.Lexicon
