Rod Gibbs, a 6-foot-8 player who had competed in college at UPS (then College of Puget Sound), was a star in AAU basketball during the early 1950s. Here, he gets off a hook shot for Tacoma-based Alpine Dairy against Seattle’s Buchan Bakers. Gibbs was a star for Alpine Dairy in 1952-53. He had played for the Bakers in 1951-52 when that AAU team was becoming a power. The Bakers went on to play in the AAU national championship final in 1956, 1957 and 1960, winning over the vaunted Phillips 66ers in 1957. AAU basketball rivaled NCAA basketball for amateur supremacy through the 1950s, but AAU power faded after 1960.Lexicon
