Description

In a humorous moment, middleweight champ Freddie Steele (left) and his manager Dave Miller posed for a picture wearing paper mustaches. But Steele never joked around when he stepped into the boxing ring. Steele, who was born in Seattle on Dec. 18, 1912, defeated Babe Risko in Seattle's Civic Stadium to capture the world middleweight championship in 1936. About 27,000 fans showed up for the fight to cheer on the hometown hero. In his successful boxing career, Steele finished with 125 wins in 142 fights, winning 60 by knockouts. In the 1940s, Steele appeared in numerous Hollywood movies and was “Bugsy,” one of six Marines in the Oscar-nominated Hail the Conquering Hero in 1944. He left Hollywood in the 1950s and opened a restaurant with his wife, Helen, in Westport and they operated that for many years.
