Description

Earl Platt was a multi-sport athlete and legend at Bethel High School who is in the school’s athletic hall of fame. He was also a star in both basketball and football at Pacific Lutheran in the 1930s and ‘40s. Pictured here in his basketball gear, Platt is also in the Hall of Fame at PLU, where he was an end on both defense and offense in football. Though statistics from the time are difficult to find, Platt was a record-setting pass catcher during the PLU glory years headlined by running back Marv Harshman and passer Marv “Tommy-gun” Tommervik. Twenty-five years later, in a mid-60s PLU homecoming program, Platt remained the Lutes’ record-holder in several receiving categories, including most yards gained in a game (158) and a season (780) and most touchdown catches in a game (2), a season (6) and a career (13). He twice earned Little All-America honors in football for his exploits. Platt also appeared with the short-lived Tacoma Mountaineers professional basketball team.
