In this 1940 game, Earl Platt, wearing jersey number 50, runs with the football for Pacific Lutheran College in a game against Bellingham in a game played on a wet and muddy field. Platt was a go-to-target as a receiver and a good tackler on defense. He was one of PLC's first All-Americans as he earned that award in 1940. A teammate of Platt's that year was Marv Tommervik, who was the strong-armed quarterback on some great PLC football teams in the early 1940s. Cliff Olson coached this PLC team. Tommervik played quarterback and was an AP Little All-American first team twice, both in 1940 and 1941. He was offered NFL contracts by four teams, but World War II interrupted his pro career. He returned to his alma mater and became a successful head football and baseball coach from 1946 to 1952. Tommervik went on to be a Pac-8 football official for 25 years.Lexicon
