George Henley (on the right) and Early Wham skim across the water driving their high-speed hydroplanes. Henley started racing outboard boats in 1955, beginning a successful racing career that lasted over 20 years and was highlighted by winning a national championship in unlimited hydroplanes. By 1963 Henley was driving the Calypso, a 280-cubic inch class hydroplane. For two years beginning in 1974, Henley drove the famous Pay N Pak, which he drove to a national championship in 1974 and 1975. Henley, who was nicknamed “Smiling George,” won 12 of the 34 hydroplane races he entered from 1970 to 1975. Wham was driving his Marion Bluegrass in this black-and-white photo.
