In this black-and-white photo taken in 1963, George Henley cuts through the water driving his limited 145 class hydroplane, the Side Winder. Henley capped a success 20-year run in hydroplane racing by winning back-to-back national championships in 1974 and 1975 driving the famous PayNPack hydroplane. Both those years, Henley won the popular Gold Cup in Seattle, which was always televised. Racing against some the greatest drivers of his era, Henley won 12 of 34 hydroplane races he entered from 1970 to 1975. After graduating from Eatonville High School in 1954, Henley began racing outboard boats.Lexicon
