In this black-and-white photo taken in the 1960s, George Henley skims across the water driving his famous hydroplane, Miss Pay 'n Pak. Henley, who lived in Eatonville, was the most accomplished driver from Pierce County. Driving Miss Pay 'n Pak, Henley won a national championship in the early 1970s. From 1970 to 1975, Henley won 12 of the 34 races he entered. Henley, who was nicknamed “Smiling George,” was the first driver to win seven High Point races in a single season. In a memorable race, Henley defeated Miss Budweiser in the Gold Cup on Seattle's Lake Washington.Lexicon
