Description

George Henley, who was nicknamed “Smiling George,” was a successful hydroplane racer and had reasons to smile. In 1974 and 1975, Henley won back-to-back national hydroplane championships. Henely's successful run racing boats began in 1955 and lasted 20 years. Henley became the first unlimited driver to win seven High Point races in a single season. After he won the President's Cup in 1974, he had his ream met with President Gerald Ford. From 1970 to 1975, Henley son 12 of the 34 hydroplane races in entered, racing against some of the greatest drivers of the era. He was inducted into the Tacoma-Pierce County Sports Hall of Fame in 2005 for hydroplane racing.
