The McLaughlins were mainstays in the Pierce County sports scene in the 1940s, and Sid McLaughlin is coach of this semi-pro team, Knapps, while Willie McLaughlin, top left, and Harry McLaughlin are likely two of its top players as they had been previously at Clover Park High School and Pacific Lutheran College for coach Marv Harshman. Harry was the star of the crew and one of the best players of that era, a skilled big man who could play a tall point guard role or take the ball in deep, where he employed a slick hook shot years before Lew Alcindor (or Kareem Abdul-Jabbar) made it famous. Harry McLaughlin’s 1,783 career points remain the third most in school history despite the lack of a 3-point shot during his era. Harry McLaughlin was inducted into the Pacific Lutheran University Hall of Fame in 1994, among the fifth group to be enshrined.Lexicon
