Description

Tacoma's Eric Simonson briefly celebrates reaching the summit Mount Everest, the world's highest peak, on May 15, 1991. The moment marked the first time his Ashford-based company, International Mountain Guides, placed a climber on top of the 29,035-foot mountain. The company he co-founded grew into the largest western guide service on Everest. The company has placed more than 400 climbers on top of Everest. “We have done well,” Simonson told The News Tribune in 2016. “I think it’s good organization and a good staff, guides and Sherpas. And we try to take good climbers. We certainly turn people away every year who aren’t ready to go.” Simonson has led numerous expedition on Everest, including the famous 1999 Mallory and Irvine Research Expedition, which found the remains of George Mallory 75 years after he went missing on the mountain.
