Hockey players (left to right), Lon Bishop, Norm Bain, Louis Weir, George Goldsberry and Ed Weir pose at the Lakewood Ice Arena in Tacoma. Hockey was a popular addition to the rink along with skating and a host of other activities for residents in the area during the ice rink’s heyday. The ice arena was the entertainment hub from its opening in 1938 until it 1982 when part of the building collapsed and the rest was demolished. It Was Louis Weir who was instrumental in starting Tacoma’s first hockey league at the arena. Weir became league president while brothers Ed and Frank also played. The league lasted for two seasons and battled teams from Olympia and Bremerton. Weir was inducted into the Tacoma-Pierce County Sports Hall of Fame in 2008.
