Description

A couple of men lower the Coral Reef hydroplane into the water in this color photo. The photo is autographed by Harry Reeves, who drove this hydroplane and was a successful driver. In the 1958 Gold Cup in Seattle, Reeves was a rookie and wasn't considered to be a contender. The previous week, Reeves had won a race on Seattle's Green Lake driving Ope, a hydroplane named after his wife, Opal. Then driving Coral Reef, which was owned by Austin Snell, Reeves finished second and first in his preliminary heats. Then in the finals, Reeves narrowly lost to Hawaii Kai.
