Description

A solo mountaineer approaches the Northwest's tallest peak, Mount Rainier, in this drawing by noted artist, writer, geologist and mountaineer Dee Molenaar. The image is similar to the painting Molinar used for the cover of the fourth of edition of his book "The Challenge of Rainier" in 2011. First published in 1971, the book is widely regarded as the most complete climbing history of Mount Rainier. Molenaar is well known in the outdoor community for his artistically renderred landform maps that have appeared in in guide books and numerous publications including the American Alpine Journal. He painted on his climbing trips, and during a 1953 expedition to K2, the world's second-tallest mountain, he painted two watercolors at 25,000. They are among the highest renderrings ever painted on Earth.
